Dear fellow golfer,

What a month of golf we’ve had in August! Who would believe we would see the first Asian winner of a Major and Tiger Woods finally lose a lead going into the final round of a tournament?

YE Yang succeeded where so many had failed before in attempting to tame the Tiger, and did so with an array of fine shots and great putts to win the USPGA Championship at Hazeltine.

With the final Major out of the way the end of the season is rapidly approaching and the nights are drawing in.

It won’t be long now till the jumpers are back out, so now is a good time to take a look at your autumn and winter clothing.

In this month’s newsletter we help you prepare for wet weather by taking a close look at the latest waterproofs on the market.

We also take a look at Ping’s latest drivers as well as looking at how using an electric trolley can benefit your game.

And there has been some good results for our teams this month, which we take a look at.

As always, if there is anything you would like talk to us about, from equipment to how your game is going, please feel free to pop into the pro shop at any time.

Enjoy the news!

The New G15 or i15 PING Driver

The New G15 or i15 PING Driver

Ping has launched two new drivers aimed at both the golfer looking for forgiveness and those who like to shape their drives from the tee.

The new G15 and i15 are the latest in Ping’s highly successful line of drivers.

Ping’s new G15 driver is engineered for golfers seeking a maximum forgiveness driver that delivers distance and accuracy. Its 460cc titanium head is longer front-to-back and features Ping’s patented ultra thin crown technology. Weight savings from the thin crown are positioned as an external sole weight to optimise the centre of gravity for higher trajectories and reduced spin.

The design of i15 driver meets the needs of golfers who place a high priority on working their tee shots. The traditional pear-shaped 460cc titanium head is engineered with a bulge crown design and deeper face to optimise energy transfer for greater ball speed and the solid feel preferred by better golfers.

Hillary & Sheila Win County Crown

Hillary & Sheila Win County Crown

Baildon members Hillary Wood and Sheila Ashton are celebrating after winning the Yorkshire Ladies County Foursomes at Meltham Golf Club.

Hillary playing off 12 handicap, and Sheila playing off 22 beat a field of nearly 100 pairs in the county final stage thanks to a nett 73 (gross 90).

Hillary admitted the triumph had been unexpected and that the duo were thrilled to put Baildon’s name on the trophy for the first time.

She said: “You want to go feeling you have a chance of winning but it was definitely a surprise.

“We were out early and shot one under par. We didn’t think it would be enough but it lasted all day at the top.”

The Baildon duo, who progressed through club and district qualifying (at Cleckheaton) to reach the final, clinched the title by just half a shot and were one clear of third-placed Kath Brammah and Sandra Bean from Shipley.

Wood pinpointed two shots during their round which perhaps gave an indication their name was on the trophy.

She said: “On the 14th, our drive looked to be heading for a ditch but it ended up on the walkway which crossed it.

“Then on the 16th, we were hitting a blind shot to the green and just managed to find the front edge and get close to the pin and Sheila holed the putt for birdie.

“When things like that happen, you think it might be your day.

“The club’s name gets engraved on the trophy and from that point of view, we are very proud.”

Well done ladies, and good luck defending your crown next year!

Scratch Team Win Strokeplay Title

Scratch Team Win Strokeplay Title

Our Scratch team may have relinquished their scratch league crown this year, but they put their name back on the First Division Team Championship trophy for the first time since 2006 with a win in the Bradford Union Team Championships at Cleckheaton Golf Club.

After a mixed morning score of 294 which included a 9 by Ian Martin (it happens to us all!), they found themselves trailing Bradford Moor by ten shots.

But the team of Ian Martin, Matt Roche, Chris Hargreaves and James Firth produced a fine comeback with an afternoon total of 286 to win by four shots, with Chris shooting a superb second-round 68 and James a soild 69. His scores of 70 69 helped James into joint second place for the individual prize.

So after missing out on the league it is great that they finished the season off with a win, proving we are still a force in the Bradford Union.

Well done lads!

'Scoring Zone' - 10 steps To Forgetting Those Bad Shots!

'Scoring Zone' - 10 steps To Forgetting Those Bad Shots!

Hitting a bad shot is one of the most frustrating things to do on a golf course, but it is vital you do not allow it to affect subsequent shots.

How often have you hit a bad shot, beat yourself up about it as you walk to your ball, and then follow it up immediately with another bad shot?

World number one Tiger Woods handles his setbacks best and rids his body of any frustrations immediately using a routine every golfer can benefit from.

After a bad shot Woods will give himself a kick up the backside for the next 10 steps, but then lets it go as soon as he takes his 11th step, and immediately concentrates on his next shot.

Try this routine next time you’ve hit a bad shot and see how it works for you.

If you’d like to talk about any aspect of your game please come and see us in the pro-shop and we’ll be happy to discuss it with you.

Yorkshire Team Championships

Yorkshire Team Championships

On Wednesday 26th August the Yorkshire 1st Division Team Championships were held at Hallamshire Golf Club in Sheffield.

The format was 2 rounds with all 8 scores to count, the top 12 teams retaining their place in the 1st division for next year and the bottom 6 teams being relegated.

Baildon were represented by scratch team members Chris Hargreaves, Matt Roche, Andy Couzens and Ian Martin.

The weather on the day was absolutely dreadful, 40 mile an hour winds and driving rain. The scores were understandably pretty high, but thankfully our boys managed to return solid scores and ended up in 5th place, our highest ever position in division 1.

Chris Hargreaves managed to return scores of 78 76 which were very creditable in that weather, and he was only 7 shots off the best individual score for the day.

Well done once again lads.

A big thank you to Dave & Shirley Ackroyd, Tom & Linda Roche, Geoff & Cathy Dixon, Geoff Coles, Matt's partner Tori, Vice Captain elect Mark Jones and Mr President Martin Binns for turning up and supporting the lads in the awful weather! With thanks to the ladies section for their letter contratulating the team on their recent success in team events.

BENEFITS TO ELECTRIC TROLLEYS

Having to carry your clubs for over four hours and around 18 holes can be a tiring experience and will no doubt have some impact on your game.

The average golf bag weighs between 10 and 20kg, so it is little wonder that golfers are prone to stiff, painful shoulders and back injuries.

Have you ever thought of investing in an electric trolley to take the strain off your back and let you concentrate on what you are on the course for – playing golf?

Electric trolleys don’t have to be expensive either. We have a wide range of PowaKaddy trolleys in the pro shop at different prices, however the fantastic FWII electric trolley is one that would recommend for any golfer.

Why not drop by the shop at any time to discuss how an electric trolley can benefit your game or for more information on the Powakaddy products click here.

Those of you that read last months news will know that Dan Teece had visited the Mizuno National Fitting Centre in Wrexham where he was fitted for a new set of irons.

Dans' irons have arrived and he has been putting them to good use on the course. Dan has been impressed with the quality of the clubs and the flight he gets with the new shafts. Dan said "The clubs look and feel great and the confidence you I have knowing that the clubs we're made for me is a real advantage."

To find out more about custom fitting call in and see Sean who can help get your clubs working harder for you.
